Of wine club, menu changes and free dessert or tapas!


A while ago we used to be open on Mondays and being creative to create specials to draw a San Diego crowd that was looking for tapas and drinks to Cueva Bar was a little more challenging. The menu still only had empanadas, flat breads, salads, soups/stews and about 4 unique tapas. To compliment the set menu, we would come up with all sort of tapas specials, as a well as medium entree style options, some of which ended up on our paper menu. We didn't have as big of a following around 2011, and my graphic design skills were limited because of my knowledge of photoshop. Can you read the crosswords on the image here?


Well, lately I've been going back in time and reflecting on whatever the post on Instagram is next. Today happens to be Thursday, or thirsty Thursday as it's usually called by many around the office as the code word to meet up at your neighborhood spot like Cueva Bar, to enjoy food, wine, or craft beer prepared by your favorite culinary team and served by your favorite bartenders and servers. I've tried a few social media specials and email marketing campaigns to spread the word but it really hasn't stuck so I have a favor to ask. What is a special sort of night you'd like to see at Cueva Bar?, specifically on Thursdays.


On a similar matter, Thursday is also known as #THROWBACKTHURSDAY. Concidentely I found this #WineWednesday video from 2015 where I am talking about a Pinot Noir.



Last weekend, we had our first wine club Saturday tasting and it was a success! I've heard amazing feedback from our guests and learnt a thing or two. Our wine club is based on the Cueva Bar's idea of offering a relaxed, cozy and casual atmosphere San Diego style, to share and learn about wine, to enjoy some of our tapas, and to create community. We had a few membership sign ups and we are feeling very excited. This wine club is for you and we welcome all ideas to make your wine experience a great one every time you visit us. With each membership there is a level or perk-ness that comes with it like complimentary tapas, discounts on your visits to Cueva Bar and more. Check it out and hopefully you can join us for April's wine tasting installment 2.0. This week I will have chosen the distributor I will work with to start tasting and release April's theme. Talking about creating content; Phew!



In the last eight and a half years we've been molding our tapas menu since day one. The very first night we opened we had a group of guests who asked if we had Mac N' Cheese. We didn't have one but on day two I got to work with one of our original cooks and whipped a 4-cheese mac and cheese. It eventually became 5-cheese Mac N' Cheese with a gluten free option. Although not a tapa, it lasted in our menu for a good 6 years.

I've heard many stories about our guests trips to Spain and all the tapas they had it makes my mouth salivate and my tummy growl every-time so I've embarked on a creative culinary journey to give our tapas menu a twist like we've never done before. What is one of the tapas, empanadas, flatbreads, or tacos that we offer you would like to see stay in our menu?

We are doing this because we welcome evolution and try to connect to it by using inspiration from your stories, and from other food we try at other establishments who offer tapas, empanadas and similar food here in San Diego.

With spirits of evolution come delicious ideas like chef Melinda's chocolate avocado pudding with strawberries. I invite you to come try it out with me!

Cueva Bar offers a fusion tapas inspired menu with plenty of omnivore, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.

Our happy hour is from Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm to 6pm. Happy hour offerings are $5 tapas, $5 wines, $5 sangria, and $4 craft beer on tap.
